Right where the ancient <strong>Santa Maria di Castello<\/strong> <strong>church<\/strong> (12th century) now stands, the first city temple was erected (<a type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.guidadigenova.it\/en\/genoa-history\/genoa-historical-centre-dock\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guidadigenova.it\/en\/genoa-history\/genoa-old-town-dock\/\">here the historical insight<\/a>). The complex hosts the <strong>Museum of Santa Maria di Castello<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Palazzo and <strong>Torre degli Embriaci<\/strong> are located in the descending part of the hill (<a type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.guidadigenova.it\/en\/genoa-routes\/genoa-historical-centre-sarzano\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guidadigenova.it\/en\/routes-video-tours-genoa\/old-town-sarzano\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">check out the route<\/a>), and Embriaci is the<strong> only medieval tower perfectly preserved in the city<\/strong>, as it survived the law decreeing that private towers should be cut in 1196. It was also stronger than domestic fights and, miraculously, than shelling to which Castello area was exposed during World War II.
